Why clean your gear?
Because it stinks! But more
important to understand is that the smell is generated from bacteria, fungus and mold that represent a serious health risk.
The overuse of antibiotics has allowed staph bacteria to evolve into what
has become known as the Superbug.
This Superbug, MRSA (methicillin-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus) has been found in sports equipment with a host of
other harmful agents by laboratories. There
has been a noticeable increase in infectious disease outbreaks that have a
direct connection to sports equipment.
| |
The
Centers
for Disease Control (CDC) and the National
Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) both have issued
recommendations for schools and
universities to routinely clean sports equipment in response to outbreaks
of infectious MRSA. This presence
of microbial organisms, bacteria, mold, and fungi are what create that awful
odor, and also cause the rashes and skin irritations athletes experience from
wearing infested gear.
The CDC has said MRSA is almost always spread by direct physical contact, and not through the air. CDC officials have said transmission has also likely occurred through indirect contact by touching objects such as towels, sheets, clothes, workout areas, and sports equipment contaminated by the infected skin of a person with MRSA or staph bacteria.
Think about it, you
wash everything you wear except your
sports equipment, yet your equipment needs it the most.

What about that odor?
The rotten smell often associated with
sports equipment is caused by sweat, mucus, blood and dirt that have
soaked into the equipment. This mix of proteins and organic matter is an
ideal breeding ground for the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungus. The
contaminants pose a health threat to the player as they can enter the
body through cuts and abrasions and cause serious infection.
If your equipment or gear has an awful
odor, it has been infested with these nasty contaminants. Simply airing
your equipment out, while useful in drying the gear and keeping the odor
at a tolerable distance, does nothing to clean the equipment nor remove
the health risk.
Our service provides an innovative solution
to the age-old problem of properly cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing
sports gear and industrial work wear.
All equipment and gear is cleaned using the Esporta 3250 Wash System and specially formulated
cleaning
solutions developed by EcoLabs and Zep Manufacturing.
Conventional cleaning only removes the surface dirt. Spraying with deodorants only masks
that awful odor.
These enzyme-based detergents and disinfectants
eliminate contaminants at the source. No other method
of cleaning compares to our total cleaning solution when
it comes to eliminating blood, proteins, mucus, bacteria,
fungus and mold from sports equipment and other gear.
Professional
athletes such as Joe Thornton, Mikael Renberg, Ed Belfour, Junior Seau, Robert
Konrad, Mike Minter, and as recently
reported, many of the St. Louis Rams, have all had staph infections and
missed valuable practice time and games while recovering. Add to
that the many hospitalizations and fatalities at the college and high
school levels, and it just makes sense to clean your gear.
